Thanks for the comment Madison. I enjoyed the material that your link lead to. In addition to tradition I think the Lottery is a good example of what Phillip Zimbardo calls the Lucifer Effect. Dr. Zimbardo was the social psychologist who lead the infamous Stanford prison experiment where students divided randomly into a guard and prisoner population played out the roles they were given in a mock prison. After a short while the guards started to abuse the prisoners in various ways. The results were shocking to Dr. Zimbardo and many others. Our assumption that moral/ethical behavior is mediated by the individual alone turned out to be wrong, social structure exerts a large influence over the ethical/moral behavior of individuals. The lottery is just as shocking; how can these people who seem normal in most respects do this horrible thing and then just go back to being "normal" folks. This is a good reason why we have to support people who are getting dumped on by the group we are in, to help break up this unfortunate tendency in human group psychology and behavior.

The Lottery is truly a horrific exploration of society and traditions. It makes us question our beliefs and ourselves closely. What Jackson is saying is that tradition often doesn't appear to have a history or logic of its own; it just is, and this type of thinking makes tradition hard to question. So we can read the novel as a sort of a plea

Tomorrow is just as important as today
As today is equally important as tomorrow
The past influences today and tomorrow
The past and present come together today
Past deep and full, present imagines tomorrow
deep, full, possible, the whole

Separation of elites from the consequences of their actions is cited by J Diamond as a primary reason for historic collapses. The political and economic process we are involved now is a process of separation from nature and from each other, particularly of elites from all natural consequences.

Political reform that connects, does not allow elites to pull away is central to reforming our hyper powered disaster in the making. Transparency of government and corporate activity along with public rating mechanisms would be helpful. Requiring legislators and executives to read all laws they vote on and cite all references would be another.

I need to write about the privacy/secrecy issues of power and tie that to the research of Phillip Zimbardo. One of the factors he includes in enabling abuse is anonymity, ideology, and disguising roles are two others and all are operative in corporate capitalism and corporate democracy. Maybe we could undermine these factors and accomplish part of system reform that way.
